Nanacamilpa Fireflies, Pulque and Antojitos Day Trip

This half-day trip, arranged through regional tour operators with local Nanacamilpa guides, combines pulque tasting, a regional lunch, and, in season, a firefly sanctuary walk across the highland plains of Nanacamilpa. The roughly six-hour itinerary departs from the town's Centro and begins with a pulque tasting at either Hacienda Ixtafiayuca or Hacienda Xochuca, where guides explain maguey cultivation on the surrounding highland plains and the aguamiel-to-pulque fermentation process. A regional lunch follows at Tequexquite, featuring Tlaxcalan dishes built around local ingredients. Between June and August, the trip adds an evening departure timed to the firefly sanctuary walk, when synchronized fireflies light up the forest floor after dusk, weather permitting. The MXN 950 (about USD 56) price includes the pulque tasting, lunch at Tequexquite, and, during firefly season, entry to the sanctuary walk; it does not include additional food or drink beyond what is listed, nor transportation from outside Nanacamilpa. Pulque tastings and the lunch run year-round regardless of season, but the firefly portion is only available from June through August and depends on weather and firefly activity, which can vary night to night. Guides work in Spanish, and the sanctuary walk portion requires walking on forest trails after dark, so a flashlight with a red filter, which avoids disturbing the fireflies, and sturdy footwear are recommended when that portion runs.
