Huamantla Pulque Museum and La Cura Tasting Walk

The Museo del Pulque de Huamantla anchors this two-hour walk through the Centro of Huamantla, a Pueblo Mágico in eastern Tlaxcala. The museum, housed in a restored building near the town's main square, offers free guided tours of its exhibits on maguey cultivation, aguamiel extraction, and the fermentation process behind pulque, tracing the drink's role in Tlaxcala since pre-Hispanic times. After the museum portion, the walk continues a short distance to La Cura, a pulquería known for its artisanal fermentation techniques and rotating selection of curados. There, visitors are led through a tasting flight of pulque natural and two or three curados, pulque flavored with fruit, oats, or other regional ingredients. A guide provides commentary throughout on Huamantla's historical role in the regional pulque trade, including its position along old trade routes between Tlaxcala and Puebla. Museum entry is free, and the tasting flight at La Cura costs approximately MXN 150 (about USD 9) per person; the walk itself does not include food beyond the tastings, nor transportation between stops, as both the museum and pulquería sit within walking distance of the main square. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and the walk is best scheduled during those days; guides work primarily in Spanish. The route covers level, paved streets in the town center, making it accessible for most visitors.
