Grutas del Coconá

Grutas del Coconá sits on the edge of Teapa in the foothills of the Sierra, where a system of limestone caves has been developed with lit walkways for visitors to walk through several chambers of stalactites and stalagmites without technical caving equipment. A small zoo near the cave entrance, housing regional animals in modest enclosures, gives visitors something to see while waiting for a tour group to gather, though it is a minor add-on rather than the main draw. Inside, a shallow stream runs through part of the cave system, and guides point out chamber formations that local tradition has given descriptive names based on their shapes. The lit sections make the caves accessible to most visitors without special preparation, though the paths can be slippery where the stream crosses the walkway. A typical visit, including time at the small zoo and a full walk through the illuminated cave chambers, takes about an hour to ninety minutes. Coconá draws a mostly local weekend crowd from Teapa and surrounding towns, so a morning visit, especially on weekdays, offers a quieter walk through the chambers before larger groups arrive.
