Jungle Walk at Yumka

Yumka, an environmental education and wildlife reserve on the eastern edge of Villahermosa, capital of Tabasco, combines a shaded walking trail through regenerated lowland jungle with an open African-savanna enclosure, giving visitors two distinct outdoor experiences in a single half-day visit. The jungle trail winds through dense tropical vegetation typical of the Tabasco lowlands, passing lagoon stretches and enclosures holding native regional species including spider monkeys, tapirs and a range of tropical birds, and requires only a moderate, flat walk suited to most visitors regardless of fitness level. The trail connects to the reserve's savanna section, opened at 09:00, where giraffes, rhinos, zebras and antelope roam a large open grassland viewed either on foot along a fenced perimeter path or from a safari-style tram for those wanting to cover more ground with less walking. No specialist equipment or experience is required for either section; visitors bring insect repellent for the humid, shaded jungle stretch and sun protection for the open savanna. Combined admission for both circuits runs about 90 MXN (approx USD 5). The reserve draws a steady stream of school groups and Villahermosa families, particularly on weekends, so a weekday visit or an early arrival gives quieter trails and more unobstructed wildlife viewing. The jungle trail is comfortable to walk year round given its tree cover, though the rainy season from June to October brings more humidity and occasional muddy sections underfoot.
