Cerro Tetakawi West Peak Trail

The Cerro Tetakawi West Peak Trail climbs the western of the two summits that make up the Cerro Tetakawi ridgeline above San Carlos, Sonora. The trailhead lies near Marina San Carlos, just off Boulevard Manlio Fabio Beltrones, and is reachable by car or taxi from central San Carlos; there is no permit or entrance fee. The route covers about 1.8 kilometers round trip with roughly 280 meters of elevation gain to the west summit, and most hikers complete it in 1.5 to 2 hours. The lower section follows a dirt track through desert scrub before the trail steepens into a rocky scramble over exposed volcanic terrain; the final approach to the west summit is more technical than the neighboring east peak, with sections of loose rock and airy exposure, which is why a certified local guide is recommended for the summit push. There is no shade for most of the climb and no water sources, refuge huts, or shelter anywhere on the mountain. A rocky saddle below the final scramble serves as a reasonable turn-around point for hikers who prefer not to tackle the exposed upper moves. From the west summit, views take in Marina San Carlos, the Sea of Cortez, and the desert coastline stretching toward Guaymas. Because the rock is loose in places, conditions deteriorate quickly after rain, and the exposed upper pitches are best avoided in wet or windy weather.
