Presa Álvaro Obregón (El Oviachic)

Presa Álvaro Obregón, known locally as El Oviachic, lies about 30 km east of Ciudad Obregón, a roughly 35-minute drive along the Cajeme-El Oviachic road. The reservoir, built on the Río Yaqui and completed in the 1950s, supplies irrigation water to the Yaqui Valley's farmland and has become one of northern Mexico's best-known bass fishing destinations. A morning departure from Ciudad Obregón allows time to reach the dam access point and arrange a boat with one of the local fishing co-ops for a half-day outing on the reservoir, targeting largemouth bass in the coves along the shoreline. Midday suits a break at the dam's access area for a packed lunch or simple food sold by co-op families, since formal restaurants are limited at the site itself. The afternoon can continue with fishing or a quieter walk along the shoreline taking in views of the Sierra de Bacatete foothills across the water. November through April brings the strongest bass fishing season and cooler daytime temperatures, making it far more comfortable than the summer heat of the Yaqui Valley. The short 35-minute drive back to Ciudad Obregón makes this an easy half-day or full-day outing without an overnight stay.
