Álamos Pueblo Mágico

Álamos, a designated Pueblo Mágico in southern Sonora, sits 90 km from Ciudad Obregón and 53 km from Navojoa, reached by car or bus along Federal Highway 15 to Navojoa and then a paved secondary road east, a trip of about 50 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes depending on the starting point. The town's colonial core, centered on the Plaza de Armas and the Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción, is lined with 17th- and 18th-century mansions built during the region's silver-mining boom, many now restored as boutique hotels and galleries. A morning arrival works well for exploring the plaza, the Museo Costumbrista de Sonora housed in a former mansion, and the wrought-iron balconies along Calle Guadalupe Victoria, followed by a midday break for regional dishes such as machaca or cocadas at a plaza-side restaurant. The afternoon suits a walking tour of the surrounding hillside streets and the El Mirador viewpoint above town, or an excursion to the nearby ghost town of La Aduana. October through March brings the mildest weather for walking the cobblestone streets, and late January draws visitors for the Festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, a classical and chamber music festival held throughout the historic center. The return drive to Navojoa or Ciudad Obregón takes under an hour and a half.
