Reserva de la Biósfera El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar

The Reserva de la Biósfera El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed protected area spanning volcanic shield fields and vast dune sea in northwestern Sonora, near Puerto Peñasco and the border with Arizona. Visitors begin at the Centro de Visitantes Schuk Toak, which houses interpretive exhibits on the reserve's volcanology, desert ecology, and the Tohono O'odham cultural history tied to the land, before heading out on marked roads to see the massive maar craters, including Cerro Colorado and El Elegante, whose rims offer dramatic views into circular volcanic depressions over a kilometer wide. A half-day visit covers the visitor center and one or two of the closer craters, while a full day allows for a longer loop through the dune fields and additional overlooks. The best light for photographing the craters and dune sea comes in early morning and late afternoon, when low sun angles bring out the texture of the lava fields and sand dunes; midday light flattens the landscape and coincides with the harshest heat. October through April is the recommended season, since summer temperatures in this stretch of the Sonoran Desert regularly exceed 40°C (104°F) and can be dangerous for hiking. The crater access roads are unpaved and require a high-clearance vehicle, and a valid entry permit from the visitor center is needed before proceeding to the volcanic field, so all visits should start at Schuk Toak.
