Isla Tiburón Access Point (Comcáac Territory)

Isla Tiburón, the largest island in Mexico, lies within Seri (Comcáac) territory in the Gulf of California and is accessed by boat from the Punta Chueca launch, arranged directly through Seri community guides who hold exclusive rights to lead visits onto the island. As a federally protected natural reserve and indigenous territory, the island cannot be visited independently; guided trips typically focus on wildlife viewing, including desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, and abundant seabird life along the coastline, as well as the crossing itself through waters frequented by dolphins and, seasonally, whales. A full excursion runs a half day to a full day, factoring in the boat crossing, time on or around the island, and the return trip, with guides providing cultural context on Seri history and their stewardship of the island. Cooler months from October through April are recommended both for more comfortable conditions on the water and for a higher chance of spotting wildlife active during the milder temperatures; summer heat on the exposed coastline can be intense. Because access depends entirely on prior arrangement with Seri guides at Punta Chueca, travelers should book ahead rather than expecting same-day availability, and should come prepared to follow the guides' directions regarding respectful behavior on protected indigenous land.
