Museo de Sonora occupies the Antigua Penitenciaría del Estado, a fortress-like former state prison at the base of Cerro de la Campana in Hermosillo, and the building itself is as much a draw as the exhibits inside. Thick stone walls, iron-barred cell blocks, and a central courtyard laid out around the old prison yard now house rooms dedicated to Sonoran geology, paleontology, archaeology, and the state's mining and ranching history, including displays on the Seri, Yaqui, and Mayo peoples. A full visit runs 1.5 to 2 hours, moving through the ground-floor galleries and up to the second level, where former cell corridors give a tangible sense of the building's original use. The courtyard offers good photo opportunities of the prison's symmetrical stone facade, especially in the soft light of mid-morning. Weekday mornings, shortly after the 9:00AM opening, are the quietest time to visit, since school groups and weekend families make Saturdays and Sundays noticeably busier. Because the museum sits directly beneath Cerro de la Campana, many visitors combine the two stops, walking or driving up to the viewpoint after touring the exhibits.
