Scuba Diving the Sea of Cortez, San Carlos

San Carlos sits on one of the most accessible stretches of the Sea of Cortez for recreational diving, with PADI-affiliated operators including Gary's Dive Shop, Cortez Exploration and Ocean Sports Dive Center running boat dives to reefs, rocky pinnacles and small islands within the bay and just offshore. Divers regularly encounter sea lions, a wide variety of reef fish, moray eels, and occasionally hammerhead sharks or a passing whale shark, reflecting the exceptional marine biodiversity Jacques Cousteau once called the Sea of Cortez the 'world's aquarium.' Certified divers can book two-tank half-day trips directly, while beginners can complete introductory dives or full open-water certification courses over several days with an instructor. Equipment rental, including wetsuits, tanks and regulators, is available through the dive shops for those without their own gear. Water temperatures and visibility are best from October through June, when conditions are calmer and clearer; the warmer summer months bring reduced visibility and a higher chance of tropical storm activity affecting boat schedules. Divers should hold or be working toward an appropriate certification level for the site depth and current conditions, and operators provide a dive briefing covering local hazards before each outing.
