Hiking Sierra de Álamos-Río Cuchujaqui Biosphere Reserve

The Sierra de Álamos-Río Cuchujaqui Biosphere Reserve protects tropical dry forest and Sierra Madre foothill terrain just outside Álamos, with trails ranging from an easy riverside walk along the Río Cuchujaqui to longer, steeper routes climbing into the foothills for panoramic views back over the colonial town. The reserve's dry-forest ecosystem changes dramatically with the seasons, appearing lush and green in the months following the summer monsoon and bare and pale during the dry season, giving repeat hikers a very different experience depending on timing. A local guide familiar with the reserve is recommended both for navigation on the less-marked foothill trails and for spotting wildlife such as coatimundis, deer and a variety of tropical birds along the river corridor. Hikers should bring sturdy footwear, sun protection and ample water, since shade is limited outside the immediate riverside corridor and temperatures can be intense even in the cooler months by midday. The reserve is hikeable year-round, but November through March offers the most comfortable temperatures, while summer heat can make longer routes genuinely risky without an early start.
