Concordia to Copala Sierra Madre Foothill Road Walk

Between the furniture-making town of Concordia and the old silver-mining town of Copala, the southern Sinaloa countryside rises gently into the first foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, and a network of quiet secondary roads and ranch tracks connecting the two towns makes for a rewarding, if informal, foothill walk. Concordia, founded in 1565 as Villa de San Sebastian, is known today for its hand-carved wooden furniture, its giant chair landmark in the town plaza, and the baroque facade of the Church of San Sebastian, considered the oldest temple in Sinaloa. From Concordia, walkers can follow the older, quieter road toward Copala rather than the main highway, passing mango orchards, small cattle ranches, and rolling hills that climb steadily as the Sierra Madre begins in earnest to the east. The full distance between the towns is around 25 kilometres by road, well beyond a single day's walk for most visitors, so hikers typically walk shorter out-and-back sections of a few kilometres from either town, using the rolling terrain and orchard views as the main draw rather than attempting the full point-to-point route. On clear mornings, gaps in the hills give distant views back toward the flat coastal plain and, from higher points, a hint of the Pacific horizon far to the west. There is no official trail infrastructure, waymarking, or park designation along this route, so hikers should treat it as rural road walking rather than a maintained backcountry trail, and should carry water and sun protection since shade is limited outside the orchard rows. Most visitors combine a short stretch of this walk with a day tour that also takes in Concordia's furniture workshops and Copala's plaza, making it a scenic add-on rather than a destination trek.
