Cerro de la Neveria Loop

Cerro de la Neveria takes its name from the ice house once built into the hill, and today the climb up its slopes from Plazuela Hidalgo in Mazatlan's historic center is the most convenient short hike available directly within the city. The loop begins at the plazuela and follows Paseo Claussen, a narrow coastal promenade wedged between the open Pacific and the base of the hill, before climbing a mix of paved lanes and stepped paths to the hilltop, historically used as a lookout point during the colonial era and now home to a mix of residential streets and public viewpoints. From the Mirador Vista Hermosa and other lookout points along the ridge, walkers get sweeping views back over the length of Mazatlan's malecon, the beach at Olas Altas, the historic center's rooftops, the three offshore islands (Venados, Pajaros, and Chivos), and, in the distance, the long sandy stretch of Isla de la Piedra. Sunset is the signature time to be on the hill, when the light catches the Pacific horizon and the three islands are silhouetted, though some viewpoints on private land were restricted in 2024 and current access should be checked locally before setting out. The climb itself is a moderate but short workout, with paved surfaces for most of the route and only limited unpaved sections, making it accessible to most fitness levels without technical difficulty. Because the entire loop sits inside the city, no transport beyond a walk or short taxi ride from the historic center is required, making Cerro de la Neveria one of the easiest and most rewarding short hikes to fit into a Mazatlan itinerary.
