Real de Catorce - Magic Ghost Town in the Desert

Real de Catorce lies deep in the Sierra de Catorce, roughly 213-216 km north of San Luis Potosí's capital and about 62 km west of Matehuala, in the high desert of the Altiplano. Most visitors drive the 57 highway north to Matehuala (2.5-3 hours), then head west on a paved mountain road for another 45-60 minutes, passing through the Ogarrio Tunnel - a 2.3-km, one-lane passage hand-dug by miners in the 1890s and still the only vehicle access into town, with traffic alternating direction on a signal schedule that can mean a wait on busy weekends. Travelers without a car can bus to Matehuala on Vencedor, Futura, or ETN, then hire a taxi or join a shared colectivo for the final climb. Founded in the 18th century as a silver-mining boomtown, Real de Catorce once held some 40,000 residents before the mines went bust and the population collapsed to a few hundred; today its cobblestone streets are lined with the shells of grand stone mansions, a former mint, and a crumbling bullring, alongside a modest but growing community of shopkeepers, guides, and artists. The Templo de la Purísima Concepción draws Catholic pilgrims year-round to its statue of San Francisco, believed to grant miracles, its walls hung with hand-written thanks and ex-voto offerings. Real de Catorce also sits at the edge of Wirikuta, a desert considered sacred by the Huichol (Wixárika) people as the birthplace of the sun and the site of their peyote pilgrimage; horseback and jeep guides based in town lead trips into the surrounding hills to abandoned mine shafts, desert viewpoints, and the site of Western films shot here in decades past. At over 2,700 meters elevation, nights are cold year-round and the thin, dry air makes for crisp stargazing. Given the long drive, an early departure from the capital is essential for a comfortable day trip, and many visitors choose to stay overnight in one of the town's small hotels to experience the quieter evenings once the day tours have left.
