Matehuala & the Northern Altiplano

Vencedor, Futura, and ETN buses connect it to the capital every one to two hours from the Terminal Terrestre Potosina, making it an easy day trip on its own or a practical overnight base for those splitting a Real de Catorce excursion into two days rather than rushing a long round trip. Drivers heading onward to Real de Catorce should treat Matehuala as the last reliable place to fill up on gasoline, since stations thin out on the mountain road beyond. For travelers with more time, the surrounding Altiplano desert - a stark landscape of scrubland, distant mountain ranges, and wide skies - offers a different character from both the colonial capital and the tropical Huasteca, rounding out a fuller picture of San Luis Potosí's varied geography.
