Plaza de Armas

Plaza de Armas, formally Jardín Hidalgo, is the founding square of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and the natural starting point for exploring the Centro Histórico. Visitors walk beneath rows of clipped laurel trees toward the wrought-iron kiosk at the center, then circle the plaza to take in the four buildings that frame it: the twin-towered Catedral Metropolitana, the neoclassical Palacio de Gobierno, the arcaded Palacio Municipal and the colonial Casa de la Virreina. Stone benches and wide walkways make the plaza easy to cross on foot, and shoeshine stands, newspaper kiosks and ice-cream vendors keep the square active through the day. A visit to the plaza itself takes only 30 to 45 minutes, but it is worth returning at different times: soft morning light favors photographs of the cathedral facade, while early evening brings out families, musicians and the plaza's ornamental lighting around the kiosk. The best vantage point for a single photograph that captures the cathedral and Palacio de Gobierno together is from the southeast corner near the Palacio Municipal. Weekday mornings are quietest, while Sunday afternoons and evenings around civic holidays draw the largest crowds, including occasional free concerts staged from the kiosk. Because the plaza has no gates or opening hours, it can be folded into a longer walking route through the Centro Histórico that also covers Plaza del Carmen and Plaza de San Francisco.
