Teatro de la Paz

Teatro de la Paz, completed in 1894 near Plaza del Carmen, is one of the most ornate 19th-century theaters in Mexico and remains an active venue for opera, symphony and ballet in San Luis Potosí. Visitors who arrive outside performance hours can usually view the marble lobby and, when open, the gilded auditorium with its Carrara-marble Muses figures flanking the stage; those attending an evening performance get the fuller experience of the hall in use, including the ornate ceiling and box seating. A daytime look at the building takes 20 to 30 minutes, while attending a concert or ballet runs closer to two hours. The lobby's marble staircase and the auditorium's gilded proscenium are the best photo subjects, and the theater's cream-and-gold exterior photographs well from across the small plaza it shares with the Templo del Carmen. Daytime crowds are minimal since the building functions mainly as a performance venue rather than a walk-through museum; the busiest times are on performance evenings, when box-office lines form shortly before curtain. Checking the current program before visiting is worthwhile, since interior access when no event is scheduled can be limited to the lobby. Ticket prices for performances are modest by international standards, making an evening at Teatro de la Paz an affordable way to experience the building at its most atmospheric.
