Gruta de las Candelas

Gruta de las Candelas is a community-run cave system in the Huasteca Potosina near Aquismón, guided entirely by a local cooperative from the Tének community. Visitors are fitted with helmets and lamps before walking and wading through chambers lined with stalactites and stalagmites, following an underground river through a series of pools that range from ankle-deep to chest-deep depending on the season and recent rainfall. The guided tour lasts 1.5 to 2 hours, moving at a pace set by the group and the guide's commentary on the cave's formations and local history. The most photogenic moments come where lamplight catches dense stalactite clusters overhead, though photography inside is limited by the dim, wet conditions, so a headlamp-mounted or waterproof camera works best. The dry season from November to April brings lower water levels, making the wading sections easier and the tour more accessible to a wider range of visitors; the rainy season can raise water levels enough to shorten or alter the route. Because entry is guided-tour only, arriving during the posted hours and coordinating with the guide cooperative in advance, especially on weekends, helps avoid a wait.
