La Fisheria

La Fisheria occupies a casual beachside spot on Avenida Rafael Melgar in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, a fishing village between Cancun and Playa del Carmen that still relies on its cooperative fleet for much of the day's catch. There is no celebrity chef pedigree attached to the kitchen; the appeal is straightforward — seafood bought directly from local fishermen the same morning it is served. The ceviche mixto, combining fish, shrimp, and octopus cured in lime with tomato, onion, and cilantro, is widely regarded as among the best on the Riviera Maya, and the whole grilled fish, butterflied and finished with garlic and butter, is the table's centerpiece order. Fish tacos, served three to a plate with a simple slaw, round out the most-ordered dishes. Beverage options run to cold Mexican beer, michelada, and a modest selection of tequila and mezcal rather than a formal wine list. The dining room is open-air and unpretentious — plastic and wood tables under a palapa roof or umbrellas, sea breeze moving through, background noise from the plaza and nearby fishing boats, and a dress code that amounts to whatever beachwear a visitor arrived in. There is no reservation system; La Fisheria fills with locals and expats especially at weekend lunch, when a short wait for a table is common but rarely more than fifteen or twenty minutes. The restaurant's appeal rests entirely on the freshness of its seafood and its unfussy, village-square atmosphere, a contrast to the more polished seafood restaurants of Cancun's Hotel Zone or Tulum's beach clubs just up the coast.
