Holbox is a laid-back island with golf carts and bicycles instead of cars, wide shallow beaches and a growing food scene. Between roughly June and September, boats go out to swim with whale sharks. The Yum Balam reserve around the island protects mangroves and bird life, and glowing bioluminescence is sometimes visible at night. A day trip is possible but long, so many visitors stay overnight. Ferries run from early morning until about 9:30PM, but times should be confirmed.
