Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres

Playa Norte forms a roughly 400-metre crescent of fine white sand at the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, and its defining feature is water so shallow and calm that swimmers can wade out well beyond the shoreline while still standing comfortably. A sandbar just offshore breaks up any incoming waves before they reach the beach, giving the bay a flat, pool-like surface that stays warm throughout the year. Beach bars and small restaurants line the back of the beach, many offering food and drink service directly to guests reclining in hammocks strung between palm trunks, and live music typically starts up in the afternoon at several of the beachfront spots. Because the beach faces west, sunset is a defining part of a visit: the sun drops directly into the water beyond the sandbar, drawing a steady gathering of visitors to the shoreline in the final hour before dusk. A half to full day is the typical visit length, with the beach busiest between roughly 11AM and 4PM as day-trippers arrive on the mid-morning ferries from Cancun's Puerto Juárez terminal. Arriving before 10AM secures a quieter stretch of sand and calmer water for swimming before the crowds build, and the same early window offers the softest morning light for photography looking back toward the palm-lined shore.
