Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres stretches just 8 km long and less than 1 km wide, and its compact size means a rented golf cart can circle the entire island in about two hours, passing fishing docks, the small downtown grid, and the open Caribbean coastline along the way. The island's biggest draw is Playa Norte on the northern tip, a shallow, current-free beach where the water stays waist-deep for dozens of metres offshore, ringed by beach bars and hammocks strung between palms. At the southern end, the rocky Punta Sur headland holds a small sculpture garden and the remains of a Maya shrine once dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, with views back across the channel to Cancun's hotel towers. The Garrafón Natural Reef Park occupies the coastline nearby, offering snorkeling, ziplining, and a saltwater pool built into the rock. A single day is enough to combine the ferry crossing, a golf cart loop, and a few hours on Playa Norte, though an overnight stay allows for calmer mornings before day-trippers from Cancun arrive on the mid-morning ferries. The most reliable light for beach photography at Playa Norte comes in the late afternoon, when the sun sits low over the water behind the swimmers. Crowds build steadily from around 11AM as ferry arrivals from Puerto Juárez and Cancun's hotel zone increase, and ease again after 4PM. The 15-minute passenger ferry from Puerto Juárez, at roughly $5 each way, is the standard route from the mainland.
