Cozumel Coral Reef (Palancar Reef)

Palancar Reef sits within the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Marine Park, a protected stretch of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef running along Cozumel's western shore. The reef's defining feature is its coral formations rising as vertical walls and pinnacles from the sandy bottom, cut through with swim-through canyons and archways that divers pass between at depths ranging from 15 to 30 metres. Because the current here runs steadily along the reef face, most dives are drift dives, with the boat crew tracking divers from the surface rather than anchoring at a fixed point; this lets divers cover long stretches of coral, sponge, and gorgonian fan formations without swimming against the current. Eagle rays, nurse sharks, green sea turtles, and dense schools of reef fish are common sightings, and visibility frequently exceeds 30 metres in the warmer months. Snorkelers can access the reef's shallower northern sections directly from boats, seeing much of the same coral structure and fish life without diving depth. A half-day outing, including boat transport from San Miguel town, typically covers two dive tanks or a snorkeling session lasting one to two hours in the water. Morning trips, generally departing between 7AM and 9AM, offer the calmest seas and clearest light for underwater visibility, while afternoon winds can stir up surface chop later in the day. Regular sunscreen is banned within the marine park to protect the coral, so reef-safe formulations are required for anyone entering the water.
