Akumal Bay

Akumal Bay is a shallow, reef-protected cove where green sea turtles feed daily on the seagrass beds growing close to shore, often in water no more than two to three metres deep and well within reach of snorkelers standing or floating just past the sand. Because the turtles are wild and the bay is a protected feeding ground, all visitors must join a guided snorkeling group, capped in size and led by a local guide who maintains distance rules to prevent the turtles' feeding from being disturbed. A typical outing lasts one to two hours, most of it spent in the water following the guide toward wherever turtles are actively grazing that morning; life jackets are required for all snorkelers, both for safety and to prevent swimmers from disturbing the seagrass by treading on the bottom. The best sightings and calmest water come in the early morning between roughly 8 and 10AM, when the turtles feed most actively and boat traffic in the bay is lightest. Later in the day, increased visitor numbers and afternoon wind can reduce visibility and push turtles into deeper water further from shore. Beyond the turtle encounter, the bay's calm, protected water and gently sloping sand make it a pleasant beach in its own right, with a scattering of small restaurants and dive shops along the shoreline in Akumal village. Regular sunscreen is not permitted in the water, and booking in advance is recommended during the December-to-April high season when guided slots fill quickly.
