Amealco de Bonfil (Rag Doll Town)

Amealco de Bonfil is 63 km from Santiago de Querétaro, reached in 1.5-2 hours on a Transportes Amealcenses bus from the Central Camionera or in about 1 hour 15 minutes by car via Highway 120. The town is the birthplace of the Muñeca Lupita, a handmade Otomí rag doll with a round painted face, ribboned braids, and colorful skirts, produced by artisan families in and around town. A morning visit typically starts at the Museo de la Muñeca Artesanal on the plaza, which displays the doll's history and regional variations, before continuing to workshops where Otomí artisans can be watched stitching and dressing the dolls by hand; some workshops welcome visitors to try a simple stitching step themselves. The afternoon suits a walk through the town's plaza and 16th-century parish church, or a visit to the nearby Presa Centenario reservoir for a quieter, greener stop outside the center. Meals are best taken at fondas around the plaza, which serve enchiladas queretanas and barbacoa on weekends. The town can be visited comfortably in any season, though late October brings the Feria de la Muñeca Lupita, a dedicated festival with dozens of artisan stalls and doll-making demonstrations filling the plaza.
