The trail into the Quetzalapan River canyon begins near Zacatlán, Puebla, reached by taxi from the town center in about 15 minutes to the canyon access point. From there, a dirt path descends roughly 300 m over 2.5 km to the base of the Salto de Quetzalapan waterfall, making the 5 km round trip a 2.5-hour outing with the return climb as the most demanding section. The surface is loose dirt and rock on the steep sections, so trekking poles help with balance on the descent and especially the ascent back out of the canyon. There is little shade in the upper canyon, though tree cover increases closer to the river. Landmarks along the way include overlooks of the canyon walls and the waterfall itself, which is the trail's natural turnaround point. There are no refuge huts or shelters along the route, and while river water is present near the falls, it is untreated, so hikers should carry their own drinking water for the round trip.
