Cuetzalan (Pueblo Mágico)

Cuetzalan del Progreso lies deep in Puebla's Sierra Norte, about 165 km and 3-4 hours from Puebla City by ADO bus from the CAPU terminal or by rental car via Highway 129. The mountain road climbs steadily and is narrow, winding, and frequently shrouded in fog, so many visitors treat Cuetzalan as an overnight trip; a very early departure, however, makes a long single-day visit possible. This Pueblo Mágico is built on steep cobblestone streets around the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís and a Gothic-revival church, with a lively covered market selling handwoven textiles, vanilla, and coffee grown in the surrounding cloud forest. A morning arrival suits a walk through the historic center and market before continuing to the Yohualichan archaeological site, a smaller relative of El Tajín with its own niche pyramids, about 20 minutes outside town. Afternoons can include a swim at one of the nearby waterfalls, such as Las Brisas or El Salto, or a visit to a local cave system with a guide. Food stalls in the market and around the plaza serve tamales de frijol con chipilín, coffee grown locally, and dishes featuring the region's wild greens. Cuetzalan is a worthwhile destination year-round, but the dry season from November to April makes the mountain roads considerably safer and the waterfalls easier to reach; the town's Feria del Huipil in October adds textile markets and traditional dance performances for visitors timing a trip around the festival.
