Macroplaza (Gran Plaza)

The Macroplaza, also known as the Gran Plaza, is a sweeping public square in downtown Monterrey built during the early 1980s urban renewal that cleared several city blocks to link the city's civic and religious landmarks into a single open space. Covering roughly 40 hectares, it is counted among the largest city squares in the world, stretching from the Catedral Metropolitana at its southern edge past the Palacio de Gobierno, the Antiguo Palacio Federal, and the Explanada de los Héroes to the Faro del Comercio monument and Barrio Antiguo to the north. Visitors walk the plaza's gardens, fountains, and sculpture, including works by Mexican artists placed along the promenade, and can cover the full length in about an hour, though combining it with the surrounding cathedral, museums, and Barrio Antiguo makes for a half-day outing. The plaza is at its most photogenic in the late afternoon and evening, when the Faro del Comercio's green laser beam begins sweeping over the square and the surrounding government buildings are lit. Weekday mornings are quiet, used mostly by office workers and vendors, while weekend evenings and holidays bring large crowds, street performers, and occasional public events or concerts staged in the open areas near the Explanada de los Héroes. Because the plaza sits at the geographic and civic heart of Monterrey, it also serves as the starting point for the Paseo Santa Lucía riverwalk toward Parque Fundidora. Shade is limited outside the garden areas, so midday visits in summer can be uncomfortably hot.
