Barrio Antiguo

Barrio Antiguo is Monterrey's oldest neighborhood, its narrow street grid dating to the city's founding in 1596 and its surviving housing stock largely rebuilt in the 19th century after earlier structures were lost to fire and flood. By day, visitors wander streets of low colonial and neoclassical-style facades painted in muted colors, browsing independent galleries, design shops, and cafes housed in restored townhouses just east of the Macroplaza. By night the same streets become Monterrey's principal nightlife district, with cantinas, bars, and live-music venues spilling onto the sidewalks, particularly around Calle Morelos and Calle Diego de Montemayor. A daytime walk through the galleries and architecture takes about an hour, while an evening visit combining dinner, drinks, and live music can easily fill two to three hours. The neighborhood is at its most atmospheric in the early evening, when the day's heat has broken and restaurant terraces begin filling, and again later at night when the bars and music venues are in full swing; Thursday through Saturday nights draw the largest crowds. Daytime visits are considerably quieter and better suited to those interested in the neighborhood's architecture and galleries rather than its nightlife. Because Barrio Antiguo sits within easy walking distance of the Macroplaza and Metro Line 2's Zaragoza station, it is easily combined with a downtown Monterrey itinerary.
