Chipinque Ecological Park

Chipinque Ecological Park protects 1,600 hectares of pine-oak forest on the slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental above San Pedro Garza García, established as a reserve in the 1980s to preserve one of the last large forested areas within reach of the Monterrey metro area. Visitors drive or take a taxi up a winding access road to a mid-mountain visitor area, from which a network of marked trails fans out, including the relatively gentle Meseta loop and the more strenuous La Cortina route that climbs toward higher viewpoints over the city. Many visitors spend two to three hours on a moderate loop trail, while more ambitious hikers combining several routes or continuing toward the park's higher elevations can spend most of a day on the mountain. The forest here is noticeably cooler than the city below, and mist frequently settles over the upper trails in the early morning, making sunrise and mid-morning the most atmospheric and comfortable time to hike before temperatures rise. The best views over the Monterrey metro area open up along La Cortina and from the Meseta's western overlooks, where the city skyline and surrounding mountains are visible on clear days. Weekends draw the largest number of hikers, cyclists, and trail runners, particularly in the cooler months from October to March, while weekday mornings offer a quieter forest experience. Vehicle access closes in the late afternoon, so visitors need to plan hikes to finish before the gates close.
