El Cerro San Juan Trail

El Cerro San Juan Trail begins in the Parque Ecológico El Cerro San Juan, about a 30-minute drive south of Tepic, Nayarit, where a parking area is available near the park entrance; no permit is required to hike within the park. The round-trip route covers 7 km with about 500 m of elevation gain and takes most hikers 3 to 4 hours, climbing through cloud forest that is noticeably cooler than the lowlands around Tepic. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with sections of exposed roots and rock as it gains elevation, and the forest canopy provides shade for much of the route, though the air becomes cooler and mistier near the higher elevations. Landmarks along the way include dense stands of oak and pine-oak forest uncommon at Nayarit's lower elevations, several overlooks with views back toward Tepic and the surrounding valley, and a summit area that serves as the natural turn-around point. There are no reliable water sources, refuge huts, or shelters along the trail, so hikers should carry all the water needed for the outing, along with a layer for the cooler temperatures at altitude. The trail is popular with local hikers on weekends and is best attempted between November and April, when skies are clearest and the forest paths are least muddy.
