Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, sits about 75 km (1 hour) from Sayulita via the coastal highway and Federal Highway 200, reachable by rental car or by ETN and Vallarta Plus buses running from Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. The Catedral de la Purísima Concepción with its neo-Gothic twin spires anchors the central Plaza Principal, and specialty shops around the city center sell authentic Huichol beadwork, yarn paintings (nierikas), and embroidered textiles, some sold directly by Huichol artisans. A typical itinerary begins with a mid-morning arrival, museum visits through midday, a walk around the cathedral and plaza, and an afternoon set aside for browsing artisan shops before the drive or bus back to the coast. Tepic's higher elevation gives it a noticeably cooler climate than the beach towns, making it a comfortable visit any time of year, though weekday visits avoid the busiest weekend crowds around the plaza. Lunch options center on the city's market, the Mercado Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, where stalls serve regional Nayarit dishes such as pozole and tacos dorados, alongside sit-down restaurants near the plaza serving contemporary Mexican fare.
