Laguna de Santa María del Oro

The Laguna de Santa María del Oro sits about 100 km (1.75 hours) from Sayulita and roughly 45 minutes from Tepic, set inside a volcanic crater in the Sierra Madre Occidental foothills; a rental car is recommended since there is no direct public transit to the lake. The near-perfectly circular lake, ringed by forested crater walls, is known for water that shifts shade between green and blue depending on light and season, and it draws visitors for swimming, kayaking, and fishing for bass and tilapia rather than crowds of tourists. A path circles part of the lakeshore through the forest, and several small lakeside restaurants rent kayaks, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards. A full day allows a morning drive up from the coast or Tepic, several hours on and around the water through midday when the light is best for photographs, a lakeside lunch, and either a short forest walk or more time paddling in the afternoon before the drive back. Restaurants along the shore serve regional dishes including fresh lake fish, caldo de camarón, and simple comida corrida plates, with several offering shaded palapa seating directly over the water. The best season runs November through May, when rainfall is lowest and the water is calmest for kayaking; because the lake sits at higher elevation than the coast, mornings can be cool, so an early start benefits from both quieter water and comfortable hiking temperatures on the crater rim trail.
