Playa San Pancho

Playa San Pancho, known formally as San Francisco, is a wide, open stretch of dark golden sand in the small town of San Pancho, Nayarit, about 10 minutes north of Sayulita. Unlike the sheltered coves further along the coast, this beach faces the open Pacific directly, giving it a strong, consistent shore break and an undertow that can be powerful close to the sand, especially around the river mouth at the north end. The beach is long and mostly flat, backed by low dunes, beach bars, and a scattering of surf schools rather than dense development, which gives it a more laid-back, less commercial feel than Sayulita. Surf lessons are popular here for both beginners and intermediates who want a bigger, punchier wave than the mellow point breaks nearby. Amenities include beachfront restaurants and bars offering loungers and restrooms to customers, along with several surf shops renting boards. There is no consistent lifeguard presence, and signage warns of the shore break's strength, so swimmers should stay attentive and ask local surf instructors about current conditions. San Pancho is easily reached by colectivo van or taxi from Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta, and the beach itself is a short walk from the town's central streets and plaza.
