Lagunas de Zempoala Lakeside Trail

Access is via private vehicle from Huitzilac, following the federal highway toward Toluca to the km 14.5 entrance on the public-use side of Parque Nacional Lagunas de Zempoala. A park entrance fee is collected in cash at the gate, and parking is available near the entrance. The trail network covers 6-7km connecting and circling the park's seven lakes, on mostly flat, packed-dirt lakeshore paths through pine forest at approximately 2,850m altitude; elevation change is minimal throughout. The surface is generally firm but can turn muddy near the shoreline after rain, and there is a mix of open lakeside stretches and shaded forest sections. The main lake, Zempoala, is the first and most developed landmark, with rowboat rentals and picnic areas near the entrance; hikers seeking a shorter walk can loop just this lake, while the full network extends to the smaller, quieter lakes further from the entrance. There are no refuge huts along the trails, though the main lake area has restrooms and food vendors. Drinking water should be carried, as lake water is not potable. Fog is common at this altitude and can reduce visibility quickly, particularly in the early morning and during the rainy season; hikers should keep to marked paths near the lakeshore rather than venturing into surrounding forest without a clear route back. The park straddles the Morelos-Mexico State border, and trail markers vary in quality away from the main lake, so a map or downloaded route is useful for the outer lakes.
