Canyoning and rappelling at Meztitla, on the forested slopes of the Sierra de Ajusco-Chichinautzin above Tepoztlán in the Mexican state of Morelos, combines a series of guided rope descents through canyon terrain with a hike back out past pre-Hispanic rock art on the canyon walls. The activity involves multiple rappels of varying height down rock faces, some passing beside or through waterfalls that run fuller in the rainy season, so participants should have reasonable fitness for scrambling over wet rock and a basic comfort with heights; most outfits set a minimum age around 8-10 and ask that participants be in general good health, since the route requires walking, climbing, and controlled descents rather than technical rope-handling on the participant's part. Guides supply the canyoning harness, helmet, and rope system for each rappel station, along with a safety briefing on entry and exit technique before the first descent; participants are expected to bring closed-toe shoes that can get wet, quick-dry clothing, and a change of clothes for after. Several Tepoztlán-based outfits run canyoning trips from the Meztitla area, generally staffed by local guides experienced in the specific canyon sections and equipped to manage rope safety, belay backup, and evacuation of a participant along the fixed route if needed. The rainy season, from July to October, produces the fullest waterfalls within the canyon and is considered the most scenic time to visit, though the rock can be slicker underfoot; the dry season from November to April offers lower water levels and steadier footing, making it a better choice for first-time canyoners or families with less rappelling experience. Trips are typically avoided during periods of heavy rain or flash-flood risk in the canyon, when outfits reschedule for safety.
