Tepotzotlán and the Museo Nacional del Virreinato

Tepotzotlán sits about 40-45 km north of Mexico City and roughly 70 km northeast of Toluca, reached in 45 to 60 minutes by car via the Periférico Norte and the Mexico-Querétaro highway, or by a combination of the Tren Suburbano to Cuautitlán station followed by a short taxi or combi into town. The town's centerpiece is the former Jesuit College of San Francisco Javier, founded in the 16th century, whose adjoining Church of San Francisco Javier displays some of the most elaborate Churrigueresque gilded altarpieces in Mexico. The former college now houses the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, whose room after room of colonial-era painting, sculpture, and religious artifacts make it one of the country's most significant collections from the viceregal period; a full visit to the museum and church interior takes roughly two to three hours. After the museum, the adjoining Plaza Virreinal and the surrounding streets hold cafes, artisan shops, and market stalls selling local sweets and crafts, making for an easy lunch stop before heading back. Tepotzotlán is especially known for its December pastorela performances, theatrical re-enactments of the nativity story staged in the former college's courtyards, which draw visitors from across the region during the holiday season. Because the town sits close to Mexico City and is compact once arrived, it works well as a half-day trip, though travelers combining it with the nearby Arcos del Sitio aqueduct or a stop toward Teotihuacan can extend it into a fuller day.
