Acolman Ex-Convento de San Agustín

Acolman sits about 40 km northeast of Mexico City and roughly 20 minutes south of Teotihuacan along the Autopista México-Pirámides, making its Ex-Convento de San Agustín one of the most convenient add-on stops for visitors already making the pyramids trip. Built by Augustinian friars starting in the 1530s, the monastery's fortress-like stone facade combines Gothic and early plateresque details, and its interior preserves faded but still legible murals along the cloister walls, among the best-surviving examples of the black-and-white grisaille painting style used in early colonial Mexican monasteries. The attached church, still an active place of worship, holds a carved stone doorway and choir loft dating to the same construction period, and a small site museum near the entrance displays religious artifacts and explains the monastery's role in the Augustinian order's evangelization of central Mexico. A visit takes roughly an hour, comfortably fitting into a Teotihuacan day trip either on the way out from Mexico City or on the return leg. The surrounding town of Acolman is small and mostly residential, though it holds a well-known traditional market in December tied to the Christmas posada season, when vendors set up extensive piñata stalls that draw shoppers from across the region.
