Tapalpa Piedrotas Circuit

The Tapalpa Piedrotas Circuit starts from the Pueblo Mágico of Tapalpa in the Southern Jalisco Highlands, about two and a half hours from Guadalajara by car, with the trailhead reachable on foot from the town center or by a short taxi ride to the Las Piedrotas access point, where informal parking is available; no permit is required. The loop covers roughly 5km with about 120m of elevation gain, making it an easy circuit suitable for casual hikers and families. The trail surface is packed dirt through pine forest, well shaded for most of the route, with open, sun-exposed clearings around the rock formations themselves. The main landmark is Las Piedrotas, a cluster of massive volcanic basalt boulders, some several meters tall, scattered among the pines in a landscape often compared to a natural sculpture garden; this area also serves as the natural turn-around or rest point before looping back toward town. There are no refuge huts along the route, but Tapalpa's town center, a short walk or drive away, has restaurants and shops. No natural water source is reliable on the trail, so hikers should carry their own. The highland setting keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than lowland Jalisco, and wildflowers are common along the pine understory in spring.
