Mascota Valley Circuit

The Mascota Valley Circuit begins in the Pueblo Mágico of Mascota, in Jalisco's Sierra Madre Occidental, reached by a roughly two-and-a-half-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta over a paved but winding mountain highway, with parking available near the town center; no permit is required to hike the circuit. The loop covers about 12km with roughly 300m of elevation gain, climbing above town through pine-oak forest before looping back, and is considered moderate given the sustained but non-technical uphill sections. The trail surface is packed dirt with some rocky stretches, mostly shaded under pine-oak canopy, with a few open ridge sections offering panoramic views of the valley and Mascota's colonial rooftops below. Landmarks along the way include several valley overlooks that serve as natural rest and turn-around points for hikers wanting a shorter outing, as well as patches of seasonal wildflowers in spring. There are no huts or refuges on the circuit, and no dependable water sources along the trail, so hikers should carry what they need for the full loop. The pine-oak forest supports a range of Sierra Madre bird species, and the trail is popular with visitors staying in Mascota's colonial town center, which offers restaurants and lodging at the base.
