Tapalpa

Tapalpa sits at roughly 2,000 meters in the pine-forested highlands of southern Jalisco, about two hours from Guadalajara, and its designation as a Pueblo Mágico reflects a town of whitewashed adobe houses, red-tile roofs, and a central plaza that has changed little in character over generations. Visitors wander the plaza and surrounding streets, browsing shops selling local ponche (a fruit punch), rompope (eggnog liqueur), and artisanal cheese, and dropping into the parish church of San Antonio on the plaza's edge. Just outside town, the Piedrotas, a field of giant volcanic boulders scattered across a hillside, and the Salto del Nogal waterfall are the main outdoor draws, both reachable by a short drive or a longer walk. A single full day covers the plaza and a visit to the Piedrotas, while an overnight stay allows time to add the waterfall or a horseback ride through the surrounding pine forest at a more relaxed pace. The cool mountain climate makes Tapalpa a popular weekend escape from Guadalajara's heat, so the town and its market are busiest on Saturdays and Sundays, while weekdays offer a quieter, more local atmosphere.
