El Malecon (Boardwalk), Chapala

The Chapala Malecón runs along the north shore of Lake Chapala in the town center, with open views south across the water to the Sierra de San Juan mountains on the far shore, and has served as the town's social gathering point since Chapala became a fashionable lakeside retreat in the early 20th century. The promenade is lined with restaurants serving fresh lake fish such as charales and whitefish, handicraft stalls selling woven goods and pottery, and a pier from which boats depart for trips to Isla de Mezcala. Visitors typically spend one to two hours walking the boardwalk, stopping for a meal or a drink at one of the waterfront restaurants and browsing the craft stalls that set up most days. The pier itself offers the best unobstructed views back toward the mountains and is a favored spot for photos, especially around sunset when the water and sky take on warm tones. The Malecón is at its liveliest on Sundays, when families from Guadalajara arrive for the day and street entertainment and food vendors multiply, while weekday mornings are calm and better suited to a quiet walk.
