Guadalajara Zoo (Zoológico de Guadalajara)

The Guadalajara Zoo covers about 90 hectares built into the walls of the Barranca de Huentitán canyon on the city's northern edge, and its layout takes advantage of the canyon terrain to create naturalistic, multi-level enclosures for its more than 1,500 animals across roughly 360 species. Visitors ride the included safari bus through African-savanna-style enclosures with giraffes, rhinos, and zebras, walk trails past big cats, primates, and reptile houses, and can visit the nocturnal animal building and an aquarium as part of the same admission. A full visit takes three to five hours given the site's size and the canyon-edge terrain, which involves some walking uphill and down between sections; the safari bus route offers the best overview and photo opportunities of the larger animals against the canyon backdrop. Animals are generally most active and visible in the cooler morning hours shortly after the 9AM opening, while afternoons, particularly on weekends and school holidays, bring the largest crowds of families.
