Huasca de Ocampo and the Prismas Basalticos

Huasca de Ocampo sits about 35 km northeast of Pachuca in Hidalgo, Mexico, reached in roughly 35-45 minutes by car via Federal Highway 105 or by a direct ATSA bus from Pachuca's Central de Autobuses; the Prismas Basalticos, a set of hexagonal basalt columns carved by the Rio Regla within the grounds of the former Hacienda de Santa Maria Regla, lie a further 5 km and about 15-20 minutes away by taxi or short drive. Huasca de Ocampo, one of Mexico's original Pueblos Magicos, has a compact colonial center built around the seventeenth-century Parroquia de San Juan Bautista, cobblestone streets lined with stone-and-tile houses, and a market selling regional cheeses, pulque, and wool textiles. A typical day begins with a mid-morning walk through the town plaza and church, followed by a drive or taxi out to the Prismas Basalticos, where a marked trail descends into the canyon to view the columns and the Regla waterfall that spills over them. The former hacienda buildings near the entrance now house a restaurant serving regional dishes such as barbacoa and pulque-based drinks, a convenient stop before or after the canyon walk. Afternoons can extend to nearby haciendas such as San Miguel Regla, which has its own set of prisms and a reservoir, for travelers with extra time. The area sits above 2,000 meters elevation in pine-oak forest, so October through March brings the clearest skies and coolest temperatures, while a morning arrival before 11am avoids the midday tour-bus crowds at the Prismas. Rainy season (June-September) can make the canyon trail muddy and slick. The round trip from Pachuca comfortably fits a single day, with most visitors allotting two to three hours at the Prismas Basalticos and the balance in the town center.
