El Chico National Park

El Chico National Park lies 10-20 km north of Pachuca in Hidalgo, depending on which entrance is used, and is reachable in under 40 minutes by car on the paved road into the forested hills; bus service inside the park itself is limited, so a rental car or taxi is the most practical way to explore. Established in 1898, it is one of Mexico's oldest national parks, covering pine-oak and pine forest across rugged terrain marked by rock outcroppings such as Las Monjas and Las Ventanas, popular with rock climbers, alongside marked hiking trails, streams, and the small reservoir at La Estanzuela. A typical day begins with a drive to one of the main trailheads, followed by a morning hike through the pine forest to a viewpoint or rock formation, with popular routes ranging from short walks near La Estanzuela to longer treks toward the park's higher ridgelines. Midday is a good time to stop at one of the rustic cabanas or food stalls near the park entrances, which serve simple meals such as quesadillas and trout dishes drawing on the area's trout farms. Afternoons can be spent on shorter forest walks or, for climbers, additional routes on the rock towers. Because the park sits above 2,600 meters elevation, October through March brings the clearest skies and coolest, crispest air, ideal for both hiking and the long-distance views from the rock outcroppings, while summer afternoons often bring rain showers. The park is frequently combined with a stop in nearby Real del Monte, making a single day cover both the forest and the historic mining town.
