Grutas de Xoxafi

Grutas de Xoxafi is a cave system near Tecozautla in the Valle del Mezquital, formed in limestone and marked by stalactite and stalagmite formations that visitors explore on foot through a series of chambers and passages. Unlike Hidalgo's better-known hot spring destinations, the caves see relatively few outside visitors and are typically explored with a local guide from the community that manages access, who leads groups through the formations and explains the cave's geology and local significance. A guided visit generally lasts 1 to 2 hours depending on how much of the cave system is opened for that day's tour, with the interior offering a cool, dim contrast to the semi-arid Tecozautla landscape outside. Because lighting inside the cave is limited, photography benefits from a flashlight or headlamp, and the most striking formations tend to be found in the deeper chambers reached partway through the guided route. Weekday visits are easiest to arrange with fewer other groups competing for guide availability, and advance coordination with the local guides is generally necessary since there is no fixed, independently accessible entrance.
