Centro Histórico de Zimapán

The Centro Histórico de Zimapán preserves the colonial-era layout of a former mining town in northern Hidalgo, built up around silver and mercury deposits and reflecting a similar mining heritage to Mineral del Monte, though with a distinct Mezquital-adjacent architectural character. The town's core is arranged around a central plaza fronted by a colonial parish church, with narrow streets lined by low, colorful stone-and-adobe buildings that climb gently toward the surrounding hills. Visitors typically spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours walking the plaza, the church, and the streets radiating outward, taking in the town's mining-era civic buildings and local markets. Zimapán also serves as a gateway to the Barranca de Metztitlán region and nearby canyon scenery, making the historic center a natural stop on a longer route through northern Hidalgo. Weekday mornings offer the quietest walk through the center, before market activity and midday heat build, while the town's main market days bring more local commerce and street life to the plaza area.
