Jardín de la Unión at Blue Hour

The Jardín de la Unión is a small triangular plaza ringed by laurel trees, sidewalk cafes, and the Templo de San Diego at its western point, with Teatro Juárez closing the far end. A three-quarter view from one of the garden's paths, with the laurel canopy framing the top of the frame and cafe lights below, captures the space at its most atmospheric. Blue hour into early evening is the strongest window, when string lights strung through the laurels and warm light spilling from cafe windows balance against the last blue in the sky; this only lasts 20-30 minutes before the sky goes fully dark and the scene becomes a straightforward night shot. The plaza is busy year-round but especially lively on weekend evenings, when mariachi bands and estudiantina troupes perform among the cafe tables and crowds gather to watch, making an uncluttered wide shot difficult after dark; the calmer window is right at dusk before the evening crowd peaks. Because the paths are narrow and packed with cafe tables and pedestrians most evenings, a tripod is often impractical; a fast prime lens handheld at a wide aperture is the more workable choice for the low light. There is no admission fee for the plaza itself, though sitting at a cafe table requires ordering. Drones are not permitted in the historic centre.
