Escalinatas de Pastita (Pastita Staircase Murals)

The Escalinatas de Pastita are a long, steep public staircase in the Barrio de Pastita east of Guanajuato City's historic centre, painted in a continuous rainbow gradient that runs from the bottom of the hill to the top between rows of small houses. The strongest compositions look straight up or down the full run of stairs, using the steps' converging lines and the gradient of colour as the main subject, with residents' doors, potted plants, and laundry lines adding incidental detail along the way. Direct, high sun through midday and into early afternoon brings out the most saturated colour in the paint, since the steep walls otherwise fall into shadow for much of the morning and evening; overcast days mute the colours less than shadow does and can be a useful backup. The staircase is a residential neighbourhood feature rather than a major tourist site, so crowds are generally light, though the growing popularity of the murals on social media has brought a steady trickle of photographers, particularly on weekends; visiting on a weekday keeps the stairs closer to empty. Because this is a lived-in residential street, a tripod can be used without much difficulty, but visitors should stay mindful of residents entering and leaving their homes and avoid blocking doorways. The climb itself is steep and sustained, several dozen stairs from bottom to top, so it is not wheelchair accessible and involves real physical effort in the thin mountain air. There is no fee to visit, and drones should be avoided both because of the tight residential space and the proximity to the historic centre's restricted airspace.
